EMA (Equitable Marketing Association) was established in 1977 with the joint effort of seven cooperatives with 234 craftspersons and 9 individual social activists. At present, EMA has 42 corporate members, 6 founder members, 71 staff members and 96 individual artisans. All the members constitute the general body of this Fair Trade Organisation. The capacity and size of EMA has grown steadily over the years.
As a Fair Trade Organisation, EMA’s chief concern has been the uplift of the economically challenged, the physically challenged, women, the minority communities, and through its producers and its own Development Centre, not only given the poor artisans and employees a livelihood, but showcased their talent in craftsmanship internationally. That has helped them to earn their well-deserved dignity as well.
From the beginning in 1977, EMA has worked in several fields like education, improvement of jobs, environment, women empowerment and employing the marginalised, the minorities and physically challenged. It has initiated several activities like stipends for the poor and deserving students in the local area, distributing school textbooks, vocational training, repair of primary school buildings, career training, creation of water resources, organic farming, solar energy, and so on. EMA work closely with other cooperatives, women’s organisations, single mothers, and have a residential training centre and hold holiday camps for the orphans.
An item like Incense Sticks helps EMA support rural women to earn without moving out of their homes. As they stay far from our Development Centre, they find it difficult to commute after tending to their home and hearth, but nurture a desire to do something to add to the family kitty.
It is significant that all the spinning of the yarn is also done by the women. And the Candles section is run completely by the physically challenged, including the manager, craftspersons and 9 individual social activists.
All the members of EMA constitute the general body of this Fair Trade Organisation. The capacity and size of EMA has grown steadily over the years.
