Demand to withdraw calling Make Fruit Fair! “European terrorism” in your DanWatch interview

Dear Sr. Ledesma,

We want to express our deep concern that you have called, as far as we understand, the work of the Make Fruit Fair! network “some kind of European terrorism” in an interview that was published by DanWatch recently at https://danwatch.dk/en/undersoegelse/formand-for-banan-eksportoerer-vi-overholder-alle-regler.

You are quoted as follows:

“I don’t know what plantations you visited where you saw pesticides not approved by the EU, that you can make that accusation. I am not surprised, because anything is possible. As a trade organisation, we try to persuade our partners to uphold the rules. All I know is, this is some kind of European terrorism, coming to disrupt and influence the Ecuadorian banana sector. Why don’t you go to Guatemala, where they pay six dollars, when we pay nearly thirty? Why don’t you go to Guatemala, to influence and annoy them? We have asked the Foreign Ministry to look at the situation and complain about these organisations trying to damage Ecuador.”

We don´t feel that connecting critical civil society organizations to “terrorism” is in any form appropriate for a representative of an internationally known industry body. We hereby ask you to withdraw your statement as it is no adequate way of having a fact based debate.

Oxfam Germany as well as all the other organizations of the Make Fruit Fair! network are well respected European and Non-European organizations that work in the field of human rights, development, environment, public health, and consumer awareness. Together we are promoting fair working conditions in tropical fruit supply chains. Our project is funded since many years by the European Commission.

It is our utmost concern to improve the severe situation of workers in the banana sector and to end human and labour rights violations in plantations. If you are interested in an open and constructive discussion on how to achieve this, we are open to start a dialogue with AEBE.

Yours sincerely,

Mirjam Hägele

International Coordinator Make Fruit Fair!
