Overview of the MFF! Project

An overview of the MFF project was made. In short, it was stated that:

Given the nature of the task and the very difficult operating context MFF is performing remarkably well. The project is on track to meet or significantly surpass all Result-level output targets and most activity-level output targets. The strategic thinking undertaken, the materials produced and the events organized have all been high quality. Oxfam Deutschland (ODE)is providing very good leadership and project management, Partners and Sub-grantees are cooperating and collaborating well and the Consortium is very productive. Reporting and M&E tools and processes are working well, ODE is on top of the financial management and MFF is on track to spend 100% of funds.MFF has already achieved attributable and significant outcomes. The early and high-quality consultative engagement with potential stakeholders and Sub-grantees has really added to effectiveness and has built capacity in terms of skills, knowledge and networking. There has been substantial and important transfer of skills and knowledge in various directions between numerous parties. MFF has been very successful in achieving large volumes of media coverage, much of it in influential media with potential to influence decision-makers and public 1Includes COLSIBA

mobilising large numbers of people to take a wide range of campaigning actions. Directly attributable outcomes have been achieved, including:on the ground (e.g. at the Finca Once plantation in Costa Ricaand the Matías plantation in Ecuador)effective pressureon retailers (as illustrated byLidl’s influence on suppliers inCosta Rica & Ecuador, by their considering whether to join WBF and by their unusual letter to MFF in December 2016, as well as byother retailers engagingpositivelywith MFF –with some even acting as mediators in disputes) engagement withsome certification schemes (e.g. Rainforest Alliance, which as a result has entered intodialogue with unionsin Costa Rica and Ecuador). MFF has influenced EU decision-makers on the regulation of UTPs and national MPs have been mobilised in the Lidl campaign. MFF has networked successfully with large numbers of NGOs and CSOs across Europe and new relationships have been built. EUROBAN meetings have been supported and have been very important for building relationships and spreading knowledge. In addition to the concrete outcomes, because of the scope and the demonstrable progress, although the size of the challenge is still large, there is the potential for real, sustained impact.
