Krakow Make-Fruit-Fair Meeting!

Between the 22nd and 24th October 2017, KKĠ participated in the final project meeting in Krakow relating to the MFF! project.

The final meeting focused mainly on Introduction on Evaluation session, Collecting outcomes of Campaigning activities,  Presenting + discussing outcomes of Campaigning activities and focus on possible future actions.

Some of the noteble results achieved by project partners presented during the meeting included:

GUATEMALA

The collective bargaining process with Chiquita was concluded in June, resulting in a pay rise. The agreements reached were as follows: new collective agreement, signing bonus/fee for every permanent worker, 19 permanent workers in each of the nine plantations and others,

COSTA RICA

SITRAP and Grupo Acón: the union has again put forward an agenda consisting of fifteen points, concerning respect for freedom of association, leave of absence for union-related activities, the use of contractors, details of payslips, working hours up to a maximum of twelve daily, and the hiring of women for work in the fields and their ability to do it.  Following a series of meetings in which no progress was made on these issues, SITRAP, in a meeting on July 27, 2017, proposed that for the benefit of the parties the negotiations be transferred to the Ministry for Labour and Social Security, and that both parties abide by the conciliation procedure. The company ignored the union’s request, despite that fact that the Ministry of Labour has summoned the parties to talks on three occasions.

HONDURAS

STAS and FESTAGRO are being supported in the process of union organisation, which is made extremely difficult in our countries by the refusal of companies to abide by national legislation and international agreements. In the case of Fyffes Suragro in Choluteca, Honduras, a meeting took place between STAS, FESTAGRO, IUF and representatives from Sumitomo in August in New York, where it was agreed to hold a meeting between the parties in September, but this did not take place.

NICARAGUA

The Chiquita-Cutrale firm announced that it has a contract with Nicaraguan producers for this year only. According to the unions, these producers are in negotiations with new purchasers.

PANAMA

SITRAIBANA held its congress and elected a new board of directors. We met with them in April and they renewed their commitment to follow up on the points under review, such as the pilot employment project for women. We visited the nurseries where most of these jobs are based, and which according to the union leaders are temporary jobs. We need to continue strengthening this process in order for these jobs to provide women with security along with all the rights established under law.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST FYFFES

At the meeting which took place in August in New York between representatives of the IUF, FESTAGRO and STAS a commitment was made to hold a meeting at national level between the parties in September. This meeting did not take place, and as a result we need to continue and indeed intensify our campaign. We need to identify other potential strategic allies, and we have already made contacts in the United States who are based at universities.

COLSIBA is due to hold its fourteenth conference in October where additional meetings have been arranged with Judy and Gabriela from ILRF (International Labour Rights Forum) in order to analyse the campaign and identify new strategies.
